Pumpkins, Space, and Castles, Oh My!

Hello everyone! I can't believe it's already November! So far here at River View, I've seen my students a total of 7 times! Time has certainly flown by. On October 25th, I officially got married! My new name is Mrs. Yambor :)

I'm so happy to say that student Square 1 Art packets have finally arrived! Parents should have received a parent letter and a packet that includes student stickers and an order form from Square 1 Art! Orders are due by November 19th! Please turn in your hard copy order form with a cash or check payment made out to River View Local Schools! Or, simply order online at www.square1art.com/shop. This free fundraiser will help me raise money to purchase new and exciting art materials for my students!

Also, new Awesome Artists and Golden Paint Brush Awards update information can be located under each school tab above! Check it out :)

These students are doing some serious and awesome work! I'm very proud!
Check out below what's going on in the art room!

1st Grade Warm and Cool Color Pumpkins
1st Grade just finished up these radical pumpkins! Students were introduced to symbols and together we talked about and made a list of symbols that represent fall! Students studied the curves and textures of a pumpkin as we created our drawings together step by step. One the second day of art, students were introduced to the concept of applied and real texture. Students used glue to outline their pumpkin and to apply real texture. On the third day, students and I talked about color and identified warm and cool colors when using chalk to add color to our pumpkins. What a mess! - but totally worth it!

1st Grade Pointillism Diptych Gingerbread
Next, 1st grade will begin to study the art of Pointillism, specifically looking at the artwork of Georges Seurat! Students will be inspired by the story The Gingerbread Man  to create a diptych artwork of a male and female ginger couple! Students will be using Q-Tips to create a painting forming dots to replicate the style of pointillism!

3rd Grade Crazy Picasso Portraits
Students were introduced to the artwork of Pablo Picasso and studied Cubism to make these crazy portraits! Students were taken out of the comfort zone when analyzing a photograph compared to portraits painted by Picasso. Students created their own portraits using simple shapes and lines. When placing these facial features in abnormal places, students started to appreciate abstract art in a fun way! Students will be using colored pencils to create intermediate color, which will really make these portraits come to life!

4th Grade Glue and Chalk Pumpkins
Students began this project by studying picures in a bird's eye view that enhanced different, shapes, and lines because of the interesting perspective. Drawing step by step, students created an interesting composition of a bird's eye view pumpkin patch. Next, students learned about applied and real texture when outlining their pumpkin with glue. On the third day, students learned and applied blending techniques with chalk to turn a flat, 2 Dimensional circle into a 3 Dimensional looking pumpkin. This project was inspired by Ginger Pacer. Check out her blog here at www.paintbrushrocket.blogspot.com

5th and 6th Grade Space Adventure
5th and 6th grade students have been super excited about this project and so have I! Students were introduced to the art element "Value," by creating simple circles into 3 Dimensional spheres! Using oil pastel, students had to use the color wheel to pick out tints, tones, and shades to create a highlight, midtone, and shadow for these awesome space compositions!

Kindergarten Castles
Kindergarteners were introduced to the art element, texture! Students used white and black paint with sponges to create a rock-like texture! On the second day of art, students were introduced to the architecture of castles using simple shapes. Students took a virtual tour of the Warwick Castle to be inspired to create these castle collages!

2nd Grade Day of the Dead Calavera
Students were introduced to Day of the Dead, a holiday in Mexico that celebrates the lives of those who passed! Students reflected on special people or pets in their lives that might have passed away. Then, students created a calavera drawing on a white piece of paper, cut it out, and used festival colors of paint to really make this artwork pop!

Square 1 Art Fundraiser

For our first project we will be creating art work for Square 1 Art! Square 1 Art offers creative school fundraising ideas and easy art based fundraisers for schools! The art work your child creates will be available for purchase on products such as cups, bowls, mugs, Ipad covers, flags, etc! The more products you purchase each elementary will receive a percentage of the money made. This money will be used to purchase materials we do not have for the art room! These products make AMAZING gifts and will be available for the holiday season! If you do not wish to order products your child will still receive their art work in sticker form for free! It's a super cool fundraiser and more information will be sent home about ordering products at the end of October! Click here if you would like more information about Square 1 Art.  Below are teacher examples of what students will be creating!

4th Grade
Students were introduced to the new art form called "Zentangle." Students practiced their own zentangles, analyzing space, line, and shapes. Drawing were made with sharpie marker, so if students made a mistake they were told to "go with the flow" and work with their mistakes!

1st Grade
Students were introduced to symmetry, looking at symmetrical shapes and forms they see in their daily lives that are symmetrical. Students worked from instruction to fold and cut out their symmetrical turtle shells using construction paper. On the second day, students were taught how to properly paint using water color (is your brush having a bad hair day?). Students worked on a symmetry drawing and will complete their symmetrical turtles on day 3.

Grade 3
Students were introduced to artist Laurel Burch. We discussed topics such as Laurel's mythical cats, pattern, osteoporosis (which the artist suffered from all her life), and analogous colors. Students created a drawing from instruction and will choose analogous colors using crayola markers to make their cats stand out from any other car they've ever seen!

Grade 6
Students were introduced to the art form collage using warm and cool colors. Students had to chose from one of the two groups to create their own tissue paper collage. On the second day students created a step by step drawing of a bear. We talked about symbols and analyzed space, line, point of view and shapes. Students will complete the collage by coloring their bears the opposite color (warm or cool?) and gluing them to their tissue paper collages.

Grade 5
Students compared and contrasted real life owl photographs and owl drawings. Students discussed pattern and drew an owl drawing from step by step instruction. Students looked at different types of pattern to represent the feathers of an owl. After talking about theories of color to enhance the pattern of their owls students used crayola markers to personal their drawings. Students will use water color for the background to finish the composition.

Grade 2
Students were introduced to the proper techniques of painting. On day 2, students were introduced to the idea of imagination through an exercise which allowed students to imagine visual images in their minds from a poem called "The Prince Frog." Students discussed aspects of the poem and were inspired to draw their own frogs using step by step instruction. Students analyzed the space between lines and shapes and finished their collage art works by using imaginative colors to give these frogs some extra pizazz!

(Picture to come soon!)
Kindergarten
Students were introduced to the proper ways to paint using water color. As a class, we also discussed different ways to make marks! (What materials can you use to make a mark? What do marks look like?) On the second day, students used their fingers instead of paint brushes to stamp and drag their flowers after discussing the parts of a flower.

What students are seeing in the classroom

Hello everyone! I've FINALLY updated the new website! I'm hoping now to be a little more consistent with making posts about what ill be happening in the art room! I've been changing the set up of the classroom as the days going on to adjust to student needs. I'm hoping to put up more visual displays throughout the year!

Above and below are two versions of art movement timelines with artists that I have made for my classroom. This was inspired from my mentor teacher, so I need to give her some credit where credit is due! She is an amazing mentor and I value every thing that she has taught me! Her classroom blog is called Paintbrush Rocket! Take a look!

I will be posting progress with our Golden Paint Brush Awards throughout the year! So far we have only had 3 days of art. Students can have a possible total of 15 points. (5 points a day! Check out the Golden Paint Brush Awards tab up top)

Conesville Elementary

We will be focusing on the art elements (the building blocks!) and principles of art through the year!

Again, I have to give credit where credit is due. Above is a picture of what Keene Elementary strives to work towards every day. I found this art work unfinished in the art closet made by Ms. Gress from the 2013-2014 school year. I decided to finish the art work and hang it on the door so we can be reminded of these values every day.

Keene Elementary

For the first day of art I introduced myself to students and I introduced what a "Golden Classroom" looks like! Students have been excited to compete with one another for the golden paint brush awards!
